Shaped Like ... a Cone
The name of the cone lamp shade is probably the easiest to remember. It's shape is more
often than not a very wide cone that helps diffuse and cast the light over a wide area.
If the cone opening is very narrow, the shape starts to resemble a related style, known
by the equally unassuming but informative name, the cylindrical lamp shade.
The cone is noted for its simplicity. For rooms with simple decor with office or hypermodern furniture that are characterized by straight lines, clean designs, the cone lamp shade fits the best.
Simple Designs
Other simple designs also exist. The rectangular or square glass lamp shade, as well as the aforementioned
cylinder, are evocative of clean, simple design. Note that the orientation of the cone can be upward
or downward. Facing upwards means the light is projected to the ceiling for maximal illumination by
reflection from the ceiling. Facing downwards means a more subdued lighting.
The cone shape in mica lamp shades
The cone shade is not only meant for glass lamp shades, but also for shades made of other materials. This is because the cone is one of the simplest yet distinctive shapes suited for a wide variety of materials. For example, mica has limited malleability and is therefore often made into simple, popular mica lamp shade shapes. The result is that mica lamp shades are very popular in the cone, as well as the cylinder form.
Fabric Material
The most popular materials for cone lamp shades may be the fabric type. These can be found on coffee tables, end tables, and small night lamps. The glass ones may be peculiarities and confined to a much more limited consumer niche.
